Art by JGlez

JGlez creates art known as, Metal Repoussé and Chasing “Repujado en Metal”, on large sheets of copper or steel. Repoussé is a technique in which malleable sheet of metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to form a raised design on the front; while chasing is used to refine the design on the front of the work by sinking the metal. All art made by JGlez is handmade and original. There are not many techniques found that offer such diversity of appearances like the repousse methods. The techniques of both uses the plasticity of metal, forming shapes with no loss of metal during the process, and the surface remains continuous. This process is relatively slow while achieving a maximum form and shapes of the desired image on an unbroken metal surface without losing the thickness.  JGlez uses an array of metal types adding to the distinctiveness among each product, such as, tin, steel and copper. Copper is one of the preferred metals, since it has the greatest flexibility, which allows for greater detail for the shapes and forms. A unique characteristic of this method, are the visual markings created when hammers and other handmade tools have direct contact with the metal.

The different shades and coloration of all art designs are done carefully, by allowing the metal to undergo natural processes of corrosion (oxidation). Corrosion occurs when metals are exposed to various environmental elements. Having the knowledge of the corrosion processes, JGlez captures it at a various points to create the different combinations of rust intensities. Chemicals such as acid, lime juice, salt, iodine and vinegar are used to achieve a specific intensity of rust produced by corrosion. Applying flame and/ or polishing the metal are also used to get color changes. Metal Repoussé and Chasing by JGlez will NEVER have any type of artificial color such as paints and stains unless requested by a customer. Copper again is a preference, due to its ability to undertake many tones and/ or colors during the corrosion (oxidation) process that is not found in steel. Once the desired tones are created, a clear-coat of varnish is used as a finish to protect the variations of tones and to prohibit further corrosion.

JGlez produces custom sceneries and pictures as Sheet Metal Repoussé and Chasing, based on the customer’s needs or wants in all sizes with an average range of 1 ft. to 10 ft. (30.5 cm to 305 cm) in width.. He has also created a variety of metal sculptures for his clients. It is believed that this handmade Metal Sheet Repoussé and Chasing Art
